Charlie Lau's Real Influence On Hitting

Many years ago I had the opportunity to be around Pete Caliendo, a baseball hitting instructor located in Chicago that worked with Charlie Lau before he died, and he stated to me that Lau often said, "most people never really understood the mechanics of his method of hitting"...which was a combination of rotary and linear mechanics.

Charlie Lau helped develop numerous .300 plus hitters, and he also INSPIRED many hitters to become much better hitters. Charlie's success for helping hitters improve and excel came from helping them to focus on the mental and visual aspect of hitting...not just the physical... even though he worked their tails off physically to improve their hitting skills.

Along with emphasizing consistent contact, he stressed the top baseball vision expert Dr. Bill Harrison's dynamic vision technique of fine centering and soft centering visual training. This was a radical breakthrough for hitters, and is still used today.

In conclusion, we owe Charlie Lau for bringing bio-mechanics, physics, and dynamic vision training into the 20th century hitting process. Without him, the advancement in hitting mechanics which have led to the improved slot position swing used by most of the better power hitters in the 21st century, would have still yet to be discovered.

"Holy Sweep, Metal Batman!"

At the levels where aluminum or alloy bats are used, I'm seeing more and more big swings and sweeping only a janitor would be proud of. Big swings and sweeping mean that you are using a longer radius swing which results in less bat speed...A.K.A. A SLOW BAT.

Compounded Daily: Eventually, the sweeping, struggling hitter, in turn, notices he has trouble getting his barrel on the inside fastball and tries to remedy this by starting his swing a little earlier. Naturally, this self correction only makes things exponentially worse.

Usually by now, the opposing catcher, pitcher, and team coach notice that you're sweeping and/or starting your swing early and begin feeding you off speed and breaking stuff because you're now vulnerable to these pitches.

If that wasn't enough of a problem, scouts see the hand problems and label you a sweeper and a NP (No Prospect) and then ZERO your OFP on your evaluation form. Well, you can forget about being on any MLB scout's follow list and being a draft pick after that.

To help prevent sweeping, purchase a MP30 training bat from Jaime Cevallos, The Swing Mechanic, and start hitting off a hitting tee (never call it a batting tee, please)  with it. Also, hit with a wood bat in practice and save your metal bat as a game bat only. By doing this, you'll have the perfect muscle memory slot position swing that the great hitters have.

4 C's and an A

Is that an under achiever's report card? Not hardly.

4 C's and an A represent Cool, Calm, Collected, & Controlled Aggression, and they are the important intangibles needed to be mixed with the Hitting WORK Formula of 70% Mental, 15% Physical, and 15% Visual to create a successful hitter in any league.

NY Yankees Give Dana Cavalea The Axe

Looking for persons to blame for their injury plagued 2013 season, the Yankees told one of the best strength and conditioning coaches in the business, Dana Cavalea, to pack his bags today.

That's like Manny Pacquiao telling his trainer, Freddie Roach, to go take a hike because he's not the dominant fighter he once was.

Dana won't have a difficult time finding another team to employ him, and I'm pretty sure once the word got out that he's now available...his phone has probably been ringing off the wall.

Sadly, with this move, it will be a long time before the New York Yankees' front office gets back their credibility. Unbelievable...MLB organizations never cease to amaze me.

MLB Organizations' Goal: To Win A World Championship

Each MLB season it's the sole goal of each organization to win a World Championship. The teams that are consistently in the running go beyond the thinking that they can do it. They have all the personnel and players in every level of their organization asking themselves daily, "What can I do to help this organization win a World Championship?"

Now that is having true pride and dedication in your work.

Los Angeles Dodgers Clayton Kershaw's Contract Extension

http://www.dodgersnation.com/clayton-kershaw-dodgers-had-300-million-contract-talks-this-year/2013/10/19

A pitcher's arm is a lot like a rifle barrel which only has so many shots in its life, and in Clayton Kershaw's case, it's more like a long distance precision rifle barrel because of his excellent pitching mechanics (better mechanics than King Felix of the Seattle Mariners that was signed to a comparable contract that's going to be possibly offered to Kershaw) AND Kershaw is a left-hander (icing on the cake). Conclusion: Signing a LHP with near perfect mechanics like Kershaw and with the inflationary trend of contacts that free agent premium pitchers are pulling down currently, makes sense. Also, signing Kershaw to an extension now at what the Dodgers are offering, is not the financial gamble like the Seattle Mariners made with "King" Felix Hernandez. In fact, it's a smart move.

The Yankees and Matt Garza?!

Really? Seriously? Those two popular buzz words seem to fit this story. Warning: You'll need a pair of boots or keep your feet elevated when you read this story on Yahoo.

My conclusion:

Well, as the old saying goes, there's good news, and there's bad news. The good news is that he still has a fairly live arm, and the Yankees have a shot at signing him, but the bad news is that he he has some mechanical issues that causes him to fatigue and lose arm strength before he reaches a 100 pitches in his starts.
In the evaluation of his big three of pitching mechanics...leg extension, hip rotation, and follow through. Matt shows a minus 25 hip rotation which means he's using his arm almost exclusively in his delivery when he steps open after his leg extension and throws before there's any hip rotation at all. Pitchers with this flaw usually develop scar tissue in the rotator group of their throwing shoulder which in turn reduces their velocity. You can add an inconsistent follow through to his mechanical woes, as well...though not as severe as his lack of hip rotation. He only loses 5 points in this category. To sum it up, Matt will have a 30% probability of injury this next season with a year or two left in his arm before scar tissue catches up with him.

Leg Extension: Zero Points Deducted

Hip Rotation: -25

Follow Through: -5

OIP (Overall Injury Probability): 30%

The Yankees would be better served if they could trade for David Price. He enters into an arbitration year with the Tampa Rays, and they will not be able to afford the financial arbitration hit and be able to sign him when he enters his his free agency year.

New York Yankees Are Still Interested In Japanese RHP Masahiro Tanaka

This, to me, is unbelievable, but they don't follow me or know about my OIP Pitching Mechanics Evaluations. Dan Haren actually would be a better free agent signing...despite their age difference.

NY Yankees in Japan to Scout RHP Masahiro Tanaka

That prompts me to do an OIP evaluation of his mechanics. Good news is that he's 24 and has a live arm...the bad news is his pitching mechanics. He's almost all arm. Masahiro is a future candidate for heavy scar tissue build up in his rotator group.

Leg Extension: -10
Hip Rotation: -15
Follow Through: -12
Reduces Rotary Inertia: -10

OIP: 47%

Haren's Pitching Mechanics' OIP Breakdown

Leg Extension: -5
Hip Rotation: -10
Follow Through: -5

OIP:  20%
